Mobile design is important because more and more people are moving from computers to mobile devices. It seems like every year heralds the announcement of the demise of computers and the increase in the use of mobile devices. And while that growth has been happening for a while, it really is starting to seem true. But even though we’ve been warned for years about the growth of mobile, many web designers are still reluctant to design for mobile simply because it’s a change, and change is hard.

In my latest project, the 7th edition of HTML, CSS & JavaScript Web Publishing in One Hour a Day, I give the book a focus on mobile design that it didn’t have before. I believe that responsive web design is an important, if not critical, design focus, and being responsive means being mobile friendly. So there is an entire new chapter focused on mobile design.

Tools to Write HTML5 and Another Giveaway

I’ve been building web pages since 1995 or 1996, and as such I am very comfortable inside the HTML. And when I started building pages, at first there were no editors dedicated to writing HTML, and then when they came along, they were text editors. Writing web pages visually, like in a word processor, was unheard of.

When visual web editors came on the market, they produced HTML that was a tangled mess of tags and characters, and they were very difficult to decipher. Plus, they would often not work as well outside the editor (i.e. inside a customer’s web browser) as they did in. So, I, like most designers of that time, quickly learned to distrust WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors.

But, if you do the math, that was over 15 years ago. And the market is starting to catch up. In fact, Adobe has two products that create great HTML5 web pages without any or with very little interaction with the HTML code: Adobe Muse and Adobe Dreamweaver. I have tried out both of these products, and while they are definitely aimed at different markets, they are both great.

Dear Jennifer Thank you so much for this article, and for the giveaways. I am a stay-at-home mom and I’d like to learn how to create websites as a way to make a little extra income. I’d love to receive a copy of Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 On Demand. I have been trying to get on a course to learn to use Dreamweaver for about a year now without any success. The course nearby keeps getting cancelled as there are not enough students who enrol each time, and so the course gets postponed. As I say, it’s been almost a year that I have been enrolling and being put off until the next time. If I could have a copy of the book, I could start training myself instead. Thank you so much!

I like how each of these chapters is organized according to a step-by-step principle, suitable for novices: no prerequisite knowledge need be brought to these books by the reader. In a world filled with ever-more-complex applications and upgrades, finding the right book for dipping one’s toes into the water (to mix a metaphor) is increasingly difficult. That said, I prefer the Dreamweaver book. I come from a cut-and-paste publishing background, and I can fumble my way through designing a document with InDesign, but web design still eludes me. This chapter on Dreamweaver looks like an excellent introduction for my skill level (which, to be honest, is somewhere in a sub-basement). Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Jennifer for your good work.I read both Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 On Demand and Adobe Muse On Demand free chapters. It was one of the best ever book i have read in my entire life. Now a days it is very difficult to get such kind of books with it’s simplicity, professional style and presentation of each topic. Firstly I want to have the Dreamweaver CS6 book. I and six of my gal pals, ages 68-84, have dabbled with creating websites to post our blogs and sell unique greeting cards. We collaborate on line to edit each other’s work. This book would be of great value to our group. I am confident that this program could help us upgrade our skills and launch more effective website pages. What I appreciate about chapter two is the format. The directions, hints, options and examples are all provided in well written english on pages with plenty of white space. That is a welcome contrast to other titles with long paragraphs of dense tecnical language.

Hello Jennifer, Have just finished reading the chapter from Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 On Demand. This sounds like my kind of book. I love the way the pages are set out, including two columns of text to a page. However, I do prefer text to be formatted to the right as well as left. It just looks neater in my opinion! All the little extra tips, how to do (and what not to do)items really make this book. I am about to design a website from scratch for a not-for-profit community family history group, and the book may be my saving grace, as I have very little experience in this field. As a volunteer for this project, I shall keep my fingers crossed that I am lucky enough to win one of the books. Keep up the good work!

Hi Jennifer, Web development is not a part of my job description. I work for the American Meteorological Society (a nonprofit organization) and my main responsibility is to help get the three main sectors of our community (academic, for-profit, and government) to stop squabbling with one another and work together for the common good of the community, and the nation. One way to do this is to hold face-to-face meetings where people can discuss common issues and problems. To facilitate networking among the attendees before, during, and after these meetings I have created a web site that provides photos, business cards, and bios of the people attending the meetings. I don’t use either of these expensive Adobe products (yet) but would like to study the books to see if investing in one or both would be a good use of our scarce resources. How timely! I am trying to get my daughters interested in web programming and have recently proposed a cooperative project of creating our very own HTML 5 game. It’s the first time they’ve been stoked about the idea of creating ( both are avid gamers). While I know quite a bit about HTML CSS and am taking a course in JavaScript, I know nothing about using canvas in HTML 5. this book would go a long way in introducing us to it!
